The Three Eagles: A ‘What If?’ Novel of the U.S.A., Mexico and the First World War
NOTE: This book is a well-rounded alternate history novel which means it looks at the impact of a different history on the lives of a number of characters. Consequently it is more like a book by Harry Turtledove rather than a book by Peter Tsouras. While it involves some battle scenes, this is not a book simply of military action that just lists various units and how they might have fought against each other. If you are looking simply for a book outlining alternative battles then this book is not for you. If you want an actual novel about the Americas in an alternate early 20th century, then it will be of interest.
The novel is in three sections. If this format is not to your taste, please do not buy the book.
It took 23 months from the sinking of the ‘Lusitania’ and the resumption of German submarine attacks on US shipping for the third time, before the USA entered the First World War. Meanwhile, in 1914 US marines had been sent to occupy locations in Mexico and in 1916 the so-called Punitive Expedition, a small-scale invasion of Mexico was launched by American forces to chase after revolutionaries. It only needed very minimal differences for the USA never to have entered the First World War and instead to have been drawn into a sustained war in Mexico. Drawing on US plans of the time, this book looks at what might have happened both within the Americas and across the world if this had occurred.
The book is in three sections set in 1917, 1920 and 1923. It features the adventures of a soldier, a spy and a pilot as they deal with the situations that have been thrown up by the decisions of the US President. Having just about won the war, the Germans seek to extend their influence in Mexico as a stepping stone for a global belt of control running from the Caribbean around to Pacific Islands. Those concerned are not simply politicians and commanders but also businesses seeking to exploit or being excluded from the Mexican economy and from the regions the forces, backed by German arms and troops, have occupied.
Alexander Rooksmoor has been writing alternate history fiction for over twenty years, based on a career researching and teaching history. In this full length novel he shows how a small change could have led to a different outcome for the First World War and the ripples this would have had across North America and the wider world. While filling the book with carefully-considered ‘what if?’ developments, he also provides rich characters to engage with, as they work to survive the challenges of this alternate history and to ensure that the USA is not left at a detriment as a result of the decision taken in 1917.
