It all started with a fancy dress party. When eleven-year-old Dan Carter couldn't decide what costume to wear, his mother suggested he should go to the party as a doll. She even bought him a dress and insisted he try it on, despite his protests. That was the moment she realised her beautiful son could perhaps replace Daisy, the adored twin daughter she had lost to meningitis seven years earlier and for whom she still grieves. She convinces herself that Dan suffers from a gender identity disorder and sets about turning her unwilling son into her daughter, with consequences neither could ever have envisaged.
