The word psychic is used to both label a person who uses extrasensory perception (also known as E.S.P. or the sixth sense) to detect things the other five senses cannot and to describe the skills they use. Therefore, psychic ability is the capacity to use something other than taste, touch, smell, hearing or sight to receive information.
For some, this may mean the ability to “see†in their mind, things that happened in the past—or will happen in the future—when they were not present. For other people it could be picking up on the conscious or even subconscious thoughts of others, and knowing things about them that you have not been told.
The mediums for gathering information via E.S.P. vary. Psychic ability can manifest itself in a variety of ways and not everyone will have the same skills and abilities. While one person may be gifted at Tarot reading, another may not be and instead is adept at reading palms.
There are two main types of psychic abilities. These are clairvoyance and precognition. Precognition means the ability to see the future. Clairvoyance refers to the ability to ascertain information unknown to you by means that do not involve the five physical senses. Some people have one or the other, while a rare few will be gifted with both. Clairvoyance is more common than precognition.
