The unit is hand-held with internal batteries (uses 8-AA-cell batteries that fit inside the handle and provide long operating life with its high efficiency...the battery for this highly efficient light will outlast you!). A second battery pack is included to provide for quick change-over while fishing. Both battery packs will give you 6-8 hours of use. The Light Engine on the tip uses a high-powered CREE LED with internal secondary optics, which enhance the light output even further.
