NEVER (EVER!) BUY A HOUSE IN MEXICO: Advice I Would Give my Own Mother about Retiring South of the Border

I live in Mexico. I have owned property in Mexico. I have owned a business in Mexico. I speak Spanish and have surfed the west coast of Baja just about all my life. And I DO NOT make a living selling real estate in Mexico, so I got no dog in this fight!

If my own mother told me she was considering a move to Mexico, the stuff I would tell her, you can read in this book!

The truth is, if you are considering such a move yourself, you might not like all of it...in fact...if you are harboring some romantic vision of life in Mexico based on some glossy Conde Nast photos...you probably won't like the majority of what I have to tell you!

But you should read it anyway! You see, if you can't handle a dose of reality, you can't handle Mexico...but it's not all rain on your parade.

I love living in Mexico! I wrote this when I lived in Baja but I have since relocated to a small Mexican town just south of Yuma, Arizona but still on the border...I love it here...hot as hell in the summer but that keeps the tourists--and ex-pats--at bay!

No more pinche gringo enclaves for me...these days I live in the real Mexico, eat where the locals eat and live with my Mexican girlfriend. Yea...I go back to the USA a lot...I have business interests there...but my life mostly takes place south of the border.

So, yes, my advice is unvarnished but I'm not blowing smoke up your wazoo and, remember, in spite of the few negatives I point out, which will only prove beneficial to you if you do decide to make the move, I have still chosen to live here when the fact is I could live most anywhere.

Think you will save money by moving to Mexico? Think again! I go into greater detail in the book on this subject but, suffice it to say, it won't happen in most cases.

Also, you need to read what I have to say about Mexican cops and how you should comport yourself if you are ever forced to interact with them--my info on this is short, sweet, and to the point--and it could well save your life!

And I also include some advice just for single, older guys thinking of coming here hoping to put a special shine on their golden years. In that regard, I speak from experience...I beat feet out of the USA after I ended up getting divorced at fifty!
